Welcome to the St Maurice Parish Music Ministry!
The more than eighty active members of our musical family invite you to join us! Our mission is to spread the Good News of the Gospel; the saving love of God, through the music we sing. As we are reminded in the scriptures, we “Praise God with Music!”
Under the leadership of our Director of Music, Norman E. Chapman, the St. Maurice Music Ministry now includes two singing ensembles for adults and teens, a children’s choir, three Handbell choirs, cantors and our Resurrection Choir which sings for parish funerals. These pages will give you information about each of our seven Parish Choirs and explain how you can get involved. So, look around, and please feel free to contact Norm Chapman at 412-271-6265 or email email@example.com.
Please be aware that all adult members of the St. Maurice Music Ministry must comply with the Diocesan guidelines for Protecting God’s Children, creating a safe environment for our children. Please contact Norm or the Parish Center for details.
St. Maurice is blessed with many qualified cantors who foster congregational singing at our masses. The role of a cantor is very different from that of a soloist. Soloists sing primarily for their voices to be heard while cantors, as part of the congregation, guide us to worship through song. The cantor’s primary responsibilities are the Gloria, Psalm and Gospel Acclamation, all of which frequently feature passages written specifically for the cantor. But ultimately, the cantor’s role in hymn singing should decrease as we strive for increased congregational participation in liturgy. Cantors at St Maurice are auditioned and should exhibit strong vocal and leadership skills, a strong work ethic and dedication to their parish. Interested singers should contact Norm at 412-271-6265 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
In the spring of 2013, we instituted Cantor Quartets at our 10a.m. Masses. These SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) groups lead the Gloria, Psalm and Gospel Acclamation in four-part harmony. Volunteers from the Adult Choir comprise our six Cantor Quartets.
The adult choir at St. Maurice has a long, rich history as an excellent four-part choral ensemble. With musical styles that range from Traditional to Classical, Contemporary, Gospel and Ethnic, the 35-member St Maurice Choir sings it all!
New singers are always welcome!! In order to maintain our level of quality, singers should demonstrate at least a moderate level of vocal proficiency. Since most of our music is sung in parts, it is also helpful for singers to read music and have experience singing in ensembles. But if you don’t, it’s okay, we are willing to train you! We ask for a high level of dedication and the ability to attend scheduled Masses and rehearsals. For additional information contact Norm at 412-271-6265 or email email@example.com.

It’s Always a Good Night to Come to Children’s Choir – because Children’s Choir kids have a great time while learning about their faith through the music we sing. Our goal is to have a very active children’s choir, rehearsing weekly and singing frequently during the school year at the Sunday Noon Mass. Because most of our children also attend East Catholic Grade School, we will sometimes sing for the 9:00 a.m. school Mass. The Children’s Choir also sings for 5:00 p.m. Mass on Christmas Eve and for noon Mass on Easter Day. In addition to singing as an ensemble, our kids are also encouraged
Please note that while we will sing for Masses frequently, we recognize that family obligations and scheduling conflicts do come up every so often, and that’s okay. We just ask that the children (and their families) do the best they can to attend rehearsals and our scheduled Masses. For additional information contact Norm at 412-271-6265 or email email@example.com.

Adult Handbell Choirs
St Maurice currently boasts two fine Adult Handbell Choirs that ring frequently at varied masses from September through May. Each group is scheduled to ring about every third week rotating through the 5:00, 10:00 and Noon masses. Currently both of our choirs are fully staffed and openings are generally filled by “graduates” from our Youth Handbell Program. However, if you are an experienced ringer and are interested in joining one of our choirs, please contact Norm to discuss the possibilities.
On February 10, 2013, we presented our first all-Handbell concert, Bells! Bells!! Bells!!! which received rave reviews from all in attendance. You are hearing excerpts from the concert on this page.
Many of the members of Adult Bells 1 have been ringing since St. Maurice purchased our 3-Octaves of Malmark Handbells in 2000. Newer ringers have also made their mark on this quality team in the last year. Although many of our ringers do not read music, they meet the challenge and produce wonderful music for our congregation to enjoy.
Adult Bells 2 is a very young choir with seven of our ten ringers in high school or college. But every member of this group is a musician, so keeping them musically challenged can be tough for their director! They tackle the most difficult compositions with determination and the results speak for themselves. For additional information contact Norm at 412-271-6265 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Membership: High school to adult*
Season: September – May
Schedule: Varied – Generally about every 3 weeks
Rehearses: Adult Bells 1: Thursdays 7:00-8:30 p.m. Adult Bells 2: Sundays 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Youth Handbell Choir
If you can count to six, you can ring Handbells! The teamwork needed for this Choir creates a lighthearted, enjoyable experience for all involved. After a very short training time, new ringers are ringing like the “pros.” After several of our ringers “graduated” to the Adult Bell Choir this year, enthusiastic new ringers stepped in to fill their gloves. This kids quickly learned many of the techniques used by more advanced choirs and showcased their talents in our February 2013 concert, an excerpt of which you can hear accompanying this page.
Although this choir is currently full, as older members advance to an Adult Bell Choir, new members will be added to fill vacancies. Interested parents can contact Norm at 412-271-6265 or email email@example.com for details and program requirements.
Membership: Grades 5-8
Season: September – May
Schedule: Noon Masses as scheduled and holidays

In support of our worship, musicians of all types add richness to religious services and special events in many ways.
Soloists and ensembles of musicians share their talents with the congregation at Mass and other parish sponsored events. Brass, strings and woodwinds are among the many instruments that have been added to our growing orchestra. Many of our Sunday Masses incorporate guitars, bass, keyboards and drums. Members who play piano sometimes accompany or fill-in behind regular musicians, and for special services.
The Orchestra is a vibrant part of our church’s worship experiences and other musical productions. This group is open to qualified adults and High School students who feel called to use their instrumental talents to the glory of God.
If interested, please contact our Director of Music, Norman E. Chapman, at 412-271-6265 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for additional details and information.
The St. Maurice Resurrection Choir is a cooperative ministry with the Ladies of Charity and sings for all parish funerals, providing vocal and emotional support to parish families at the time of their greatest need. Singers are notified when a funeral mass is scheduled and attend as often as their individual schedules allow. Rehearsals are very infrequent and brief and are held at the convenience of the group’s members. Although the singers in this choir are modest about their vocal abilities, they provide an invaluable ministry to our Parish Family.
It takes a special kind of person to offer the level of understanding and compassion needed to support others at their hour of greatest need. If you believe that you can offer your time and talent to this most worthwhile of Ministries, please notify Norm Chapman at 412-271-6265 or email email@example.com ask to be added to the Resurrection Choir contact list.
